Timing Procedure for Late Type Scroll Fuel Systems
If an engine has problems starting it may be because the timing is off. This article explains the procedure for ensuring the timing is set correctly in a Caterpillar engine.
Figure 1 below shows the timing location which is located in the flywheel housing. Viewing the engine from the front, turn the engine clockwise until coming up on compression stroke no. 1.
Put a 3/8" bolt into the hole allowing it to touch the flywheel until it locates and inserts into the hole in the flywheel, whilst still turning the engine clockwise. This is the engine now locked at TDC No. 1.

Figure 2 below shows the timing location on the pump. With the gear loose on the pump, place only the bolt into the pump (no washer). With the timing pin inserted into the hole shown, turn the pump until the pin locks into the fuel pump camshaft. This is now the fuel pump timed at no. 1 TDC.

Remove the bolt from the fuel pump. Fit the washer and torque the bolt to 200 lb-ft (270 Nm).
Ensure both timing pins are now removed before turning the engine.
